I'd recommend a Dell flat-panel display one of the smaller ones like 17" for convenience. Mini towers are fine too, but then you need a monitor.

It isn't what I'd recommend buying for the purpose, but a laptop will do fine as long as you get a very good traveling case and treat it with great care.

Here's what I use, which will be the cheapest possible option, and you can check out the possibility without investing a lot of cash this way. There are other programs, but so far these two are the best I've tried. More on this below.Ħ) MIDI cable, USB cable (Midisport 1x1 has one built-in), and audio cable from computer to your live rig.ħ) Extreme Sample Converter or CDXtract to convert between sample player formats. However, you can start out using your computer's line outputs or headphone outputs. Many of these also have MIDI interfaces, and it's best when they're one unit for convenience. (I use the 2x2 myself, but I might get a 1x1 for gigs, so I don't have to pull it out of my studio each time.)ĥ) A low-latency audio interface for your computer. Minimum 512M in any case, ideally more.Ģ) a program to play samples, such as one of the following:ģ) A copy of Scarbee - hopefully in the format for your player, but if not, there are sample conversion programs that do very good jobs.Ĥ) MIDI adaptor for your computer, like the MidiSport 1x1. (I use a laptop for Native Instruments B4, a Hammond organ sim that's superb.) YOU WILL NEED A LOT OF RAM, unless you use a player program that streams from disk.
